Cats instinctively prefer to drink running water - it's in their genes and there are evolutionary reasons for this, which we have explained in detail here for those interested. If cats are only offered standing water, they usually drink too little - often with serious health consequences. This becomes even more dangerous if they are fed dry food, which is actually unnatural and requires large amounts of water to digest, which is then removed from the body. According to a recent medical study, 35% of cats over the age of 8 die of urinary tract diseases and kidney problems. A drinking fountain encourages your cat to drink enough through the running water, minerals in the urine have no chance of forming crystals, and urinary grit and stones are avoided.

Yes, the Lucky-Kitty cat fountain is large enough for several cats with a water supply of approx. 1.5 liters; For example, this is used by many cat rescues and breeders and is often shared by several cats. Many of our customers have multiple cats (the record we know of is 15!) and are very happy with the Lucky Kitty cat fountain. Up to four cats can comfortably drink water at the same time in the different areas, depending on their preference directly at the water outlet, on the slope over which the water runs down, or in the lower depression where a "small lake" is formed for drinking. In practice, however, all cats never drink at the same time, which is why the Lucky Kitty is suitable for significantly more cats.

You will find the marking in the form of a small, raised line about 2-3 centimeters above the opening in the well into which the water flows. This makes it very easy to refill without removing the top part - simply add water from above while it is running until the maximum fill level is reached. Even if the fountain is turned off, there should still be enough water in it that a "small lake" can be seen at the top. Since the fountains are hand-made, this marking is not particularly clearly visible on many cat fountains - in this case, please fill the lower bowl so full that nothing overflows, put the upper bowl on and "remember" the maximum filling level You can now see it in the lower part of the upper shell.

The constant circulation of the water enriches it with oxygen - but the most important thing: Ceramic has an extremely smooth and dense surface (much denser than, for example, plastic, which actually has a very porous structure when viewed under the microscope) dirt and bacteria that get in The substances that can settle and multiply on the porous surface of plastic have no chance on our smooth ceramic! And we built the drinking fountain with no corners or edges - so it can be cleaned in just a few minutes - or you can simply put it in the dishwasher.

You will definitely never find activated carbon filters with us! Studies by the magazine Ökotest of activated carbon filters in commercially available water purifiers have shown that activated carbon filters can tend to become heavily contaminated - we have therefore decided against using these filters. This is cheaper and more hygienic for you than the expensive replacement filters. An American study* also confirms that cats like unfiltered tap water much more than treated, filtered water.

(*Drinking water preferences in the cat. Wooding B, Mills DS. 2007)

For owners of long-haired cats, we have a long-haired permanent filter in our range as an accessory. The permanent filter keeps long hair as well as cat litter crumbs and food residue away from the pump and thus extends the cleaning intervals. This filter will last for many months and can and should be regularly doused with boiling water to keep it clean and germ-free.

As a wholesaler of ceramic indoor fountains, we have had many years of experience with normal ball fountains in use as so-called “cat fountains”. The experience we have gained has led us to develop a cat fountain that meets the very specific needs of domestic cats. Examples of the many disadvantages of ordinary ball fountains include the dangerous cables hanging loosely from the edge of the bowl and frequent flooding, which always occurs when the cats knock over the fountain ball standing in the bowl and the pump then pumps the water further onto the bowl The room floor is pumped or the cats use the large bowl as a bathtub. Tipping over spring balls may also pose a risk of injury to the cat and small kittens may even drown in water bowls that are too large. The usual bowl fountains are also not suitable as drinking fountains for hygienic reasons, as the fountain balls inside are very difficult to access and clean and bacterial slime and algae quickly settle here.

Cats should have running water available around the clock because they like to drink both during the day and at night - of course you can leave a tap running day and night - but if you calculate the costs that arise if you just do it all the time If you let it trickle down easily, you'll come up with a surprising number. After 6 minutes of dribbling, we already had a 1.5 liter water bottle full - there are 525,600 minutes in a year, which means you get 131,400 liters of water per year - if 1,000 liters of water costs around EUR 5 on average (this varies depending on the location) Then you will incur water costs of EUR 655 per year - for a fraction of that you can get a Lucky Kitty cat fountain that will last for an unlimited number of years.

When developing a "real" cat fountain, hygiene and therefore quick and easy cleaning were our top priority. The Lucky-Kitty can be cleaned under running water in just a few minutes, as it basically only consists of two ceramic bowls and these have no corners or edges - if you do this once every three to five days, depending on the number of cats in the household, that is usually sufficient. The Lucky-Kitty is also made entirely of dishwasher-safe ceramic! If you take your time, a complete cleaning, including cleaning the pump, takes around five minutes - with a bit of practice, it can also be done in three minutes. You can find comprehensive cleaning instructions with tips and tricks here

The Lucky-Kitty cat fountain is 100% "vandal-proof" :-) - because it was designed as a special drinking fountain for cats. The entire top part has no "flaps", no wobbly large ball and no cable hanging loosely from a shell, like normal indoor fountains have no "points of attack" and are pulled down to the floor. In addition, the solidly manufactured fountain weighs 5 kg including water filling. You can safely leave the fountain running unattended - even the biggest "little vandals" have no chance of opening the fountain, knocking it over, moving it or doing other "nonsense". (The Lucky Kitty is even used by ferret owners because even ferrets, who are relatively destructive, cannot dismantle the fountain.)

In the Lucky-Kitty cat fountain, a pump works with only 2 watts of power, the power supply only has around 3 watts, which is around 5 watts in total. According to the formula 5W * 24 hours, this is an electricity consumption of 0.12 kW/h per day.

For the pump, this means the following electricity costs for 24 hours of continuous operation, 7 days a week (i.e. if it runs day and night without any interruption) at a kW/h electricity price of €0.25:

per day: €0.03

per week: €0.21

in 4 weeks: €0.84

(This calculation applies to the pump with power supply introduced from May 2014)

When we designed the Lucky Kitty, we worked towards very quiet operation right from the start. The pump used is a little more expensive than the cheap pumps used in plastic imported fountains, but it is very quiet in operation. Thanks to a computer-developed wave surface over which the water drains, we also prevent annoying water splashes and flow noises from the water and the ceramic material can no longer transmit "resonant vibrations" of the pump mechanics - the result: probably the quietest cat fountain.

(Only applies to older models up to 2012) The flow limiter built into the pump, which ensures optimal water flow, has been lost during cleaning or is too loose under the nozzle and can move. On older models you will find the flow limiter in the form of a small, perforated disc when you pull out the connector on the pump to which the hose is attached.

The "flow limiters" have been replaced in newer models by a practical "angled connector". You can easily reorder angled connectors directly from the shop in the "spare parts" section .

Please check the following points and your pump will be running at full power again in just a few minutes:

  1. Enough water in the lower bowl - 1.5 liters? -> Pump must be completely submerged in water
  2. Pump exactly in the middle of the bottom shell? -> If the pump is too far back, the hose will kink
  3. Does the white angled connector on the pump point towards the cable? -> if not, the hose can kink
  4. Propeller pulled out and opening cleaned/descaled?  -> Pump exactly Instructions clean
  5. Important: the main cause of insufficient delivery capacity: has the angle connector on the pump also been removed and cleaned inside?
  6. Cleaned the inside of the water outlet connection in the upper shell?
  7. Is the regulator on the front flap of the pump set to "maximum" (+)?

(to 1.) This is often because the small silicone hose has a kink after assembly - simply reposition the pump again (almost the middle of the lower shell is optimal) and the water can flow again. If this is not the case, the pump or nozzle is dirty.

(3.) Please clean the pump thoroughly as described in the cleaning instructions and remove the small propeller from the bearing bush. Also clean the opening under the connector that the hose is plugged into on the pump and the angle connector itself. In 99.9% of cases where the pump stops, dirt such as limescale has collected in the bearing bush, which causes the magnetically mounted rotor to run "unevenly" or blocks the rotor. If the pump hums even though the propeller bearing has been cleaned as described above, a touch of Vaseline, which should be used to grease the rotor magnet, usually helps. You can find comprehensive cleaning instructions with tips and tricks here

Attention! If the rotor is permanently blocked by limescale deposits (limescale is only visible when the pump is dry!), the pump and in particular the power supply will break due to overload - damage caused by improper cleaning is not covered by the guarantee! We strongly recommend cleaning the pump thoroughly once a week, as described in the enclosed, illustrated instructions . This includes removing the propeller and cleaning the opening and descaling if necessary. Then you and your cat(s) will enjoy it for a very long time.

The most important thing to start with: the Lucky Kitty cat fountain is designed so that you can hardly hear it - if it hums audibly, then something is wrong.

When you switch on the pump after cleaning, you will first hear a noise for a few minutes, which is caused by tiny air bubbles that are still in the pump - then after a few minutes the pump becomes completely quiet. If not, check the pump by placing it in your sink and letting a little water run in - if the pump doesn't hum, it could only be due to one of the following points: First, please check whether the pump is still firmly seated - usually it is because the pump feet have come loose from the ground and the housing is touching the ceramic. Simply press the rubber feet of the pump firmly again - if necessary, rub the feet and base with a little alcohol for better adhesion, then the fountain will be as quiet as it was on the first day.

If that's not the case, either the upper shell is not sitting correctly on the lower shell - just adjust it a little and the noise should disappear - if that doesn't help, the pump rotor bearing point is most likely dirty.

Please clean the pump thoroughly as stated in the instructions and take the small propeller out of the bearing bush and clean the opening from limescale and dirt using an ear swab and a little vinegar. Also clean the opening under the connector where the hose is placed on the pump, the angle connector and the connector through which the water comes out in the upper shell. In 99% of cases where noise occurs, dirt has collected in the bearing bushing, which leads to the magnetically mounted rotor running “out of round”.

We recommend that you dismantle and clean the pump thoroughly once a week, as described in the accompanying illustrated instructions. The ideal position for the pump is almost in the middle of the base. You can also download cleaning instructions as a PDF to your computer here . You can find comprehensive written cleaning instructions with tips and tricks here

Of course, you can also get long-term spare parts from us, such as hoses, nozzles or pumps - should something ever become worn or lost. A hose set with three spare hoses and a small hose brush can be ordered here in the shop, as can a spare pump. If you need a spare shell (upper or lower shell), which we can also supply individually as a spare part, or other spare parts, please simply order them directly from the shop in the "Spare parts" section .

We rarely receive Lucky Kitty drinking fountains that are not accepted by cats. For hygiene reasons, the returned and used cat fountains will not be put back on sale (so unfortunately they cannot be sold at a cheaper price). The safety and health of our furry friends is our absolute priority.

This is done with the Lucky-Kitty without removing any tanks or plastic containers or even disassembling it - water is simply poured into the lower bowl or from above while it is running - done - it couldn't be easier or quicker! :-) We generally recommend filling up the Lucky Kitty at the installation location - only the most skilled jugglers can manage to carry the full fountain around without it spilling over.

All cats love running water - they already have it in their genes - experience shows that most cats drink from the Lucky Kitty in the first few days - and usually significantly more than before. Since cats are also "neophobics" - i.e. skeptical of anything new - there are also some particularly anxious or old cats who need several days to drink from Lucky Kitty. Give your cat some time to get used to it - cats are often very particular when it comes to changes in their familiar surroundings. Some cats go to Lucky Kitty straight away - most take one to four days; A few, particularly shy or old cats, sometimes need a week or longer until they have learned to "trust" the new drinking fountain.

  1. Always place the Lucky Kitty far away from the feeding place (at least 2 meters) because cats never drink where they eat
  2. ...of course this also applies to the litter box
  3. Do not put your cat under pressure by, for example, repeatedly putting it in front of the fountain
  4. Be sure to let the drinking fountain run at night as well, as most cats (as original desert animals) drink at night and check the litter box for increased urine output, as cats often drink "secretly".
  5. fill the Lucky-Kitty properly; the water level should be so high that there is always a “small puddle” of water in the upper bowl that is visible from the outside.
  6. Especially at the beginning, it is also important to keep the cat fountain particularly clean and clean it thoroughly about every three days.
  7. If your tap water contains chlorine (the municipal utilities provide information), do not give it to your cat - cats can smell chlorine even in low concentrations and will not drink this water - in this case, give your cat plain water from the discount store or boil the water first .
  8. Some customers also report that their cat only drank from the Lucky Kitty when they initially added a small splash of milk, unsalted chicken broth , tuna water or mineral water to the water - but every cat is different.
  9. Bowls that have previously been placed should be put away (in a controlled manner) and if you have turned on the tap for your cat, please do not do this anymore - this will help your cat get used to the new drinking place more quickly.
  10. Patience, patience, patience. Some cats - especially shy or older cats who have been drinking from a bowl for many years - simply need time to get used to a new drinking opportunity.

If you take these tips into account, your cat will probably no longer want to give up Lucky Kitty after a short time.

Here are the results of a small survey we asked on Facebook to over 23,000 Lucky Kitty fans :
How long did it take for your cat to drink from the Lucky-Kitty?

Yes, even if the pump is not switched on, your cat can drink easily from the lower area of the fountain where the water is permanently standing - please check the water level regularly to ensure that it is nice and high. However, we recommend letting the fountain run at night as well, as cats, as descendants of desert cats, particularly like to drink at night.

Please do not position the pump too far back in the lower shell, otherwise the silicone hose will easily kink and hinder the water flow. The optimal position for the pump is exactly in the center (middle/middle) or even a little further forward in the lower shell, otherwise the hose can kink and not enough water flows.

We have installed a restriction in the pump's angled connector, which automatically ensures optimal water pressure at all times. The pump automatically delivers exactly the amount of water that is required for the drinking fountain to function perfectly. The manual quantity setting on the pump is therefore reduced to a minimum so that the pump is perfectly preset without the need for lengthy adjustments. Plug in - done!

What you have in your drinking fountain is called “biofilm.” Biofilms are harmless collections of microorganisms. Biofilms are everywhere where there is water or where it is damp - for example on your cat's tongue and in the water pipes in our homes. If the biofilm gets out of hand, you can feel it as a slippery surface. Proper cleaning with standard household cleaners and then rinsing with vinegar water prevents the biofilm in the medium term - there is nothing you can do about the biofilm that keeps getting into the water from your water pipes or from the cat's mucous membranes. If you have pipes in your house that are heavily contaminated with biofilm (often old pipes or plastic pipes from the company), use still mineral water to operate the Lucky Kitty. If you are interested in the topic further, google “biofilm”.

Cats love running water - they already have it in their genes - experience shows that many cats drink from the Lucky Kitty cat fountain on the first day - and usually significantly more than before. Since cats are also "neophobics" (google "neophobia" if you are interested in the topic) - i.e. they are afraid of everything new - there are also some particularly anxious or very old cats that have been around for several days or even two/three It takes weeks to drink from Lucky Kitty. Once you get used to the new thing, you usually don't want to give up the Lucky Kitty cat fountain anymore. Only about one in 1,000 cats do not go to the cat fountain even after 14 days - provided the location and hygiene are correct.

To ensure that this small residual risk is excluded for you, we give an "acceptance guarantee"*: we take back every Lucky-Kitty cat fountain purchased through our shop, even used, after 14 days - although cat fountains are normally exempt from return on the basis of the hygiene regulations for pet accessories are excluded - and will reimburse you in full for the cost of the drinking fountain. If you would like to return the Lucky Kitty cat fountain based on the acceptance guarantee, please let us know briefly beforehand. We will refund you immediately upon receipt of the Lucky-Kitty cat fountain - but as I said, this only happens rarely - usually the little furry bottoms love the Lucky-Kitty cat fountain and never want to give it away!
